Abas Kanu

Abas Kanu is the Associate General Counsel Europe/Asia and Bank Regulatory Advice in the Enterprise Regulatory Office (ERO) of Bank of Montreal’s Legal Corporate & Compliance Group (LCCG). He leads coverage of regulatory developments in Europe and Asia, including management of ERO’s regulatory risk framework and oversight of regulatory liaison in those regions. He also leads ERO’s analysis and management of significant regulations that affect multiple BMO regions (Canada, U.S., Asia and Europe) Before joining ERO, Abas was Senior Counsel, Commercial, advising BMO’s commercial banking, commercial products and corporate finance teams. Previously, he was a senior associate at Stikeman Elliott LLP with a diversified practice including banking, private M&A, private equity, structured finance, derivatives, privacy and corporate governance.
Abas co-chairs a committee of LCCG’s diversity council and previously chaired an award-winning LCCG diversity sub-committee (Cdn Lawyers’ 2014 Innovatio Award). He also co-founded the award-winning diversity committee at Stikeman Elliott LLP.
